About Us
Selected delivered work.
The Bionic Eye has delivered commercial drone work across rail, water, utilities and film for over a decade. The examples below are described by type. Named case studies, with the client identified and the results quantified, are published here as each client agrees to be named.
What connects the work is engineering. Much of it was carried out before an off the shelf system existed for the task, which meant building the airframe or integrating the sensor before the survey could be flown. That capability is why the work was possible, and it still sits behind our technical support and in-house repair.
Rail and infrastructure
Survey grade LiDAR capture of bridge and viaduct structures for rail contractors, recorded to survey standard without track possession or rope access. The value is in the access removed, since the structure is captured from outside the operational railway and the cost of the possession is taken out of the inspection.
Water and wastewater
Confined space inspection of underground assets, including parts of the London sewer system, flown for water utilities and the civils contractors delivering their programmes. The drones operate without satellite positioning, so the survey is completed without a confined space entry and without taking the asset out of service.
Utilities
Corona and ultraviolet inspection systems built for utilities operators, locating discharge and thermal faults on overhead lines, substations and insulators while the asset remains energised.
Film and broadcast
Aerial camera platforms built and approved for feature film production, engineered when no system for the shot existed off the shelf. The film work is where the business began, and it set the habit of building for a requirement that had no ready equipment.
Custom engineering
Custom airframes and sensor integrations for applications with no commercial equivalent, with payload capacities extending to 125 kg. Where a required sensor had not previously been flown, the integration was part of the delivery rather than a reason to decline the work.
Bespoke hydrogen drone
Working with the fuel cell manufacturer, The Bionic Eye supplied the airframe and propulsion for a record breaking endurance drone built for a competition. Powered by hydrogen rather than batteries, the drone stayed under 25 kg maximum take-off mass, carried a 5 kg payload and remained airborne for over an hour, an endurance that battery power could not reach at that weight and payload.
Manufacturer case studies
Alongside our own delivered work, we hold the case studies behind the systems we supply, and as the authorised ABZ Innovation dealer we can share them in full. In summary:
- Cleaning. Factory facades cleaned at around 300 square metres an hour, and a ten year moss roof of about 550 square metres cleared in roughly three hours, both with chemical-free water.
- Solar. Panel washing at around 90 per cent less water than manual methods, with a one megawatt array covered in the order of ten to twenty minutes.
- Agriculture. Water cut by 85 to 95 per cent against tractor spraying, operating cost reduced several times over, a documented wheat yield gain of 0.8 tonnes a hectare, and biological pest control by drone using Trichogramma.
These are ABZ Innovation's own results from European deployments, given as evidence of what the platforms achieve rather than as work carried out by The Bionic Eye.
